A Turtle-Loving Terp: Sherry Fan (Participant)

Image
Hello~ My name is Sherry Fan and I am a freshman Physiology and Neurobiology major from Gaithersburg, MD. I am a member of the UMD Badminton team and I love to stay active. In my spare time, I enjoy drawing, reading, learning, and volunteering. At home I have a pet turtle named Guigui. When I got her, I spent hours on end researching the anatomy and behavior of turtles - I am curious to see how much semi aquatic turtles have in common with sea turtles. I am super excited to interact with sea turtles in person! I have been fascinated with them since writing a research paper about them in elementary school. Sadly, when I learned about sea turtles then, they were already endangered, and currently, the situation has only gotten worse. I am looking forwards to contributing to the well being of the turtles at the hospital and using what I learn to continue helping the environment in the future. I am also looking forwards to meeting inspiring new people, making great friends, and havin...

Here to Have a Good Time: Jane Xie (Participant)

Hello! My name is Jane and I'm a junior Cell Biology and Psychology double degree from Rockville, Maryland. At home, I like to do DIY crafts, fawn over cute animals on the internet, and watch a little too much Law and Order: SVU. My favorite animal has to be cats, because I feel that their sassy and lazy character is highly relatable. This will be my first year on the Terps Helping Turtles trip and I'm super excited! I am most looking forward to being able to interact closely with the various sea turtle species, the volunteers at the rehabilitation center, and, of course, the beach. I hope to get out of my comfort zone and just thoroughly enjoy myself, the trip, and everything that the experience has to offer. I also hope to gain a better insight into how our actions affect the environment, and what we has individuals can do to live and advocate for a more eco-friendly and environmentally conscious lifestyle.

Hey everyone! My name is Katie and I’m a junior Animal Sciences/Pre-Vet major. I’m from Rockville, MD and in my free time I enjoy reading, volunteering, spending time with my dog, listening to country music, and irresponsibly binge-watching The Office, Parks and Rec, and Once Upon a Time on Netflix ;) I have a lot of favorite animals, but some of my favorites are dogs, tigers, kangaroos, and sea turtles (of course)! This is my third year on the Terps Helping Turtles trip (hence the title). I was a participant on this trip my freshman year, and I co-lead the trip last year as well. I am so excited to be back because, honestly, Terps Helping Turtles has been one of the best experiences of my life, and I really hope you all enjoy it too! Not only did we get to work with sea turtles, but we also participated in a sea turtle necropsy, met some birds a local raptor center, visited an aquarium, and taught children about sea turtles. I have learned so much about how we affect the environment o...
